Reading aloud vs speaking freely: which finds mistakes?

Why a good read-aloud score doesn't mean you're "fine"
A strong read-aloud score is real progress and worth trusting — it means the sounds themselves are under control when you have full attention to spend on them. But it answers a narrower question than most learners assume: can you produce this sound correctly when you already know exactly what's coming? Real conversation never works that way. You're retrieving vocabulary, building grammar, tracking what the other person said, and producing sounds all at once, and pronunciation is often the first thing that slips when the other three are competing for attention.
This is precisely why a learner can score consistently well reading a passage aloud and then, minutes later, produce noticeably rougher speech describing their weekend unscripted — that's not a contradiction or an inconsistent tool, it's two different skills being measured, and the gap between them is itself useful information.
What each mode actually surfaces
Reading aloud is the right test for: isolating a specific sound substitution, confirming an articulation fix has actually landed, and tracking segmental accuracy over time without the noise of also composing content. It's the fastest way to get a clean signal on "did that fix work," which is why most of the drills in this series are read-aloud sentences.
Speaking freely is the right test for: filler word density (covered in how many filler words is too many), pacing and hesitation under real pressure (covered in long pauses vs natural pauses), and whether a pronunciation fix has actually generalized past the drill sentence it was learned in. A sound that's reliably correct only when read from a script hasn't fully transferred yet — freeform speech is the test that reveals that gap.
Using both deliberately
The most efficient practice pattern isn't picking one mode — it's using read-aloud to build and confirm a specific fix, then checking that same sound in freeform speech a few days later to see whether it survived the switch to real cognitive load. If it did, the fix is durable. If the substitution reappears specifically under freeform conditions, that's not a failure — it's exactly the information you need, and it tells you the sound needs more practice at natural conversational speed, not more drilling in isolation.
Drill it
Read-aloud check: Record: "Think about this thing for three months." — a fixed sentence, useful for isolating a specific sound like /θ/.
Freeform check: describe what you did yesterday in 30–60 seconds, unscripted, and see whether the same sound holds up once you're also composing the sentence.
How do I know it's improving?
Compare accuracy on the same target sound across both modes over a few sessions, rather than trusting either mode alone. A shrinking gap between your read-aloud accuracy and your freeform accuracy on the same sound is a better progress signal than either score rising in isolation — it means the fix is becoming automatic rather than something you can only produce when you're not thinking about anything else.
