Why does my 'j' sound come out closer to a 'zh' or 'z'?

English /dʒ/ is a stop-plus-fricative combo that several languages simplify to a pure fricative, /ʒ/ or /z/. Here's why 'jeep' can sound like 'zheep.'

Because English /dʒ/ (the "j" in "judge") is actually two sounds glued into one fast unit — a stop followed immediately by a fricative — and if your first language doesn't have that exact combination, the natural simplification is to drop the stop half and keep only the fricative, which lands close to /ʒ/ (the "zh" sound) or /z/.

30-second version: Linguists call /dʒ/ an affricate: it starts as a full stop (tongue blocks all airflow, like /d/) and releases directly into a fricative (a hiss, like /ʒ/), the whole thing happening in one quick motion. Why the stop half gets dropped

An affricate is a genuinely unusual kind of sound — a stop and a fricative sequenced so tightly they function as one phoneme rather than two. Not every language builds sounds this way. French and Portuguese, for instance, have /ʒ/ as a fully independent, common sound (it's the "j" in French je), but no equivalent /dʒ/ affricate — so when a French or Portuguese speaker meets English "judge," the mouth substitutes the nearest sound it already has fluent, automatic control over, which is the fricative alone, minus the stop.

This is a genuine substitution, not a matter of degree — /dʒ/ and /ʒ/ are two different English phonemes that distinguish real word pairs, most famously lesion vs legion, so the swap can occasionally change which word a listener hears, though it's rarer than a vowel merger because relatively few English word pairs hinge on exactly this contrast.

Then chain them together as fast as you can without losing either piece: /d/-into-/ʒ/, collapsing toward one sound. The goal is a genuine two-phase gesture that happens to feel like one sound once it's fast enough, not a single fricative from the start.

A useful check: say "judge" in slow motion and watch for a brief, complete stop at the very start, before any hiss begins. If the hiss starts immediately with no silent gap before it, the stop phase is missing.
