Why does 'very' come out sounding like 'berry'?

Spanish and a few other languages don't distinguish b and v in speech, even though the spelling does. Here's why the merger happens and how to fix it.

Because in spoken Spanish — and this exact pattern shows up in a few other languages too — the letters B and V represent the same sound, so the spoken merger that's completely normal in Spanish carries straight over into English, where /b/ and /v/ are two distinct phonemes that change real words.

30-second version: Spanish spelling keeps B and V as separate letters for historical reasons, but speech collapsed them centuries ago into one sound, roughly a soft, lips-together-or-nearly-together approximant depending on position in the word (linguists call this betacismo). English never merged them: /b/ is a full stop, both lips pressed shut then released with a burst of air; /v/ is continuous friction, top teeth against bottom lip, no stop at all. A Spanish-speaking mouth reaching for "very" often produces something closer to a /b/, because that's the sound the spelling-to-speech mapping has always pointed to.

Why this is a different problem from v/w

This pair is easy to confuse with the v/w mix-up, but the mechanism is different. The v/w problem comes from one in-between sound covering two English targets. This one comes from a spelling-driven merger in the source language — B and V are already the same sound in speech, regardless of context, so there's no "in-between" acoustic quality to split; it's closer to a full substitution, /b/ standing in for /v/ wherever it appears.

The two consonants also differ in a way that's completely unlike v/w: /v/ has continuous, audible friction; /b/ is a stop with no friction at all, just silence and a burst. That's a bigger physical gap than most sound confusions, which is actually good news — once the two articulations are clear, they're easier to keep separate than a pair that's acoustically close to begin with.

How sayit catches it

/b/ and /v/ leave very different signatures in the audio: /b/ shows a brief silence (the lips fully closed, blocking all sound) followed by a sharp burst; /v/ shows continuous frication noise with no silent gap anywhere. sayit's phoneme model reads that difference directly from the waveform, so a "very" that was actually produced as /b/ registers as a substitution at that slot — target /v/, produced /b/ — with the "sounded like" hint naming "berry" if that's the real word it landed on, which for this specific pair it usually does.

What the fix looks like

The key change is stopping the lips from fully closing. For /v/, the top teeth should rest on the bottom lip — no lip-to-lip contact at all — and air should flow continuously through that contact the whole time you're making the sound; you should be able to hold "vvvvv" indefinitely, which is impossible for /b/, since /b/ is a stop and stops can't be held.

A direct test: try to hold each sound for two full seconds. If you can hold it as a continuous hum, it's /v/. If it collapses into silence or a repeated burst, it's still /b/.

Drill it

Record: "The very berry jam was too bitter." Both target words sit next to each other, which makes the contrast unusually easy to hear on playback — if they sound like the same word twice, that's the merger, audible.
