What actually moves coherence
Announce the shape
One sentence at the start that tells the listener what is coming — 'I want to talk about my first job, because it taught me something I did not expect' — buys you two minutes of goodwill.
Connectors have jobs
Use because, although, whereas and so when the logic needs them. Firstly, secondly, thirdly used as a visible scaffold is heard as a memorised template rather than thought.
Reference words
That, this, the other one, the same thing — pronouns and demonstratives are what stop you repeating the noun eight times. They also make the answer sound like speech rather than a list.
End on purpose
A closing sentence — 'so that is why I still recommend it' — signals control. An answer that fades out sounds unplanned, even when the content was strong.
Four drills that work
- 1Record a Part 2 and write down its shape afterwards in three words. If you cannot, the listener could not either.
- 2Take an answer you gave and re-give it with one connector removed — did the logic survive?
- 3Practise the last sentence first: decide how the talk ends before you start it.
- 4Give a Part 3 answer as position, reason, example, limit. Four moves, forty-five seconds.
Straight answers
Is coherence marked separately from fluency?
No — they are one criterion, Fluency and Coherence, worth a quarter of the band. That is why a smooth but disorganised answer and a well-organised but halting one can end up at similar levels.
How many linking words should I use?
As many as the meaning needs and no more. Examiners notice connectors used mechanically, and a list of signposts with nothing between them is worse than plain sentences.
Does sayit measure coherence?
Partly. We measure the audible part — pace, where your pauses land, filler words and rhythm — and show the transcript so you can judge the organisation yourself. We do not score the logic of an argument.
