Why do people find it hard to ask for help?

IELTS Speaking Part 3

Why do people find it hard to ask for help?

no preparation, about 1 minute to speak

A band 7 to 8 answer

About 128 words at a natural pace — roughly what 60 seconds holds.

Answer it yourself first

Record your own answer first. A model you have read three times comes out with a flattened rhythm, and examiners are trained to hear exactly that. Read it afterwards for the vocabulary and the shape, not to memorise the sentences.
A band 7 to 8 answer

Mostly because asking is read as an admission, and in a lot of workplaces that reading is accurate rather than paranoid. If people who ask questions are quietly marked as struggling, then not asking is a rational response, and telling individuals to be braver misses where the problem sits. There is also a simpler reason, which is that people overestimate how much they are imposing. Being asked for help is usually mildly flattering, and almost nobody predicts that about the person they are about to ask. What changes it, in my experience, is seeing somebody senior ask a basic question without any embarrassment. That does more in one meeting than a policy does in a year, because it demonstrates that the cost people fear is not actually charged.

Straight answers

How long should my answer to “Why do people find it hard to ask for help?” be?

About 60 seconds. Long enough for the answer plus a reason or an example, short enough that the examiner can get through the rest of the set.

Should I memorise the model answer?

No. Record your own version first, then read the model for the shape and the vocabulary. A memorised answer changes rhythm and pace noticeably, and examiners are trained to hear it — it usually costs more than the better wording gains.
